Why Rebol is so related with France?
« on: April 24, 2007, 05:09:12 PM »

Hi all,
I've been looking/reading Rebol stuff on the web trying to find some NEW info about Rebol, and I found out that the new Rebol book has just came out, BUT, it is written in French (REBOL Guide du programmeur By Olivier Auverlot), from rebol's web site.

Looking at http://devcon2007.rebdocproj.org/ it says that there was a Rebol conference held in Paris, France from 05/10/07 to 05/11/07.

Looking at Amazon, it shows "Programmation Rebol By Olivier Auverlot" written in French too...
...and so on..

I have nothing against France  Grin, but I'm just curious why it is so related with France or at least French language. As far as I know Carl Sassenrath was born here in California USA.  Cool
I'm getting more and more hooked by Rebol stuff, and I would like to be able to have access to more NEW information/tutorial/guides...

I have the book: "REBOL: The Official Guide by Elan Goldman and John Blanton" which I'm currently reading it, and in my opinion it is a great book.

Vive la REBOLution!!

It is interesting and funny though.

Well, REBOL is for some reason just more popular in France than it is in some other countries; but one of the main reason is probably Olivier Auverlot and his books. Smiley Someone should just write some English books...

Info about REBOL is somewhat scattered, but there is a lot in English. Mailing list, rebol.org, rebol.net, AltME, and so on... you may want to visit http://rebolweek.blogspot.com/ for REBOL related news.

About the conference, it's not "there was" but "there will be", in about three weeks. There has been one in 2004 in Davis, CA (http://www.efishantsea.com/devcon2004/) and one in 2005 in Milan, Italy (http://www.colellachiara.com/devcon05/). There are videos avaliable of the previous two conferences, and I assume there will be videos of the French one.

OOPPSSS...  Grin my bad, there will be....   sorry.. Roll Eyes

Thank you Gabriele for your comments, and yes, you are right, someone should just write some Rebol books in English.

It should be a big winner in Quebec as well then. As a Canadian I would love to be able to adopt REBOL as the third Canadian official language! ;-}

PS: I agree, documentation is incomplete and scattered. I hate to see sites that have not been updated for a year or more. There are many like this in the REBOL world and they should be removed or updated. Nothing is worse for a language when the last post/update was in 2005!!!!!

It's probably a little bit prejudiced, but aren't the French kinda known for liking to invent new ways and generally do stuff differently than the rest of the world? Ie Rebol is very different from the most common programming languages, which might prevent less progressive people from even giving it a chance? Tongue

And news on this front;  Peter Wood is working with Olivier to translate the latest book to English.  Notes in Announce here.  Some chapters are already online of purchase.

Cheers,
Brian
