Revitalize reboltalk
« on: March 20, 2008, 06:41:53 AM »

I think that unfortunately Reboltalk forum isn't used enough (and you could say the same about Rebol as a language too). Thought up some suggestions, based on what I successfully did with another board, that might hopefully change this:

* Drop the forums that aren't used, or contain some important information that's still useful.
* Merge similar forums if they have less than about 5 posts per day.
* Try to be different than the competition. For example Altme is horrible grouping discussions (threads), finding old but important information (stickies), distributing your applications (attachments) and I can't access it from work. Focus on your strengths!
* Come up with original features. For example you could maintain an updated list of the best snippets in the Rebol scripts library (since it's filled with alot of old junk that sometimes doesn't even work anymore). Maybe a bi-weekly post with advanced programming topics? Something that makes users want to come back regularily..

I've been thinking the same thing over the last few days. I planned on just posting more, and hope for a "look busy, be busy" effect.  Smiley  Well timed post.

But DefiantPC; if you read this, I'd like to open a user.r forum.  The REBOL user group has been hidden in the other REBOL communications channels with no "guest" accessible face.

Cheers,
Brian

Another sign of that there are too many forums is that I quite often have to look in several of them when I'm trying to find my own posts Smiley

It would be a really cool feature if code-blocks parsed and colored Rebol code btw..

Absolutely true.

Some of the worlds are republished/mirrored to less hidden web locations. For example, chunks of the REBOL3 world (one of the main REBOL developers' hang outs) is archived at REBOL.org:

http://www.rebol.org/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rebol/aga-groups-index.r?world=r3wp

The URLs are persistent, so you could create and publish a list of useful threads.

Yes we are reading the suggestions and not only is it time for revitalization, but the scripts and the design need to be updated as well...

We are taking all suggestions into consideration ( keep em coming! ) and will schedule some time in mid to late April to start the project...

Have a fantastic day!

I always thought it should be done in REBOL, as a proof of concept. There are so few projects in REBOL so easily accessible to the public through a webbrowser other than Carl's blog system. Also it could be a nice and refreshing change from all these PHP forums we have everywhere with features unique to REBOL Talk.
