Subject: Re: Lightweight Languages Conference at MIT

Highlights:

10. Easily the best conference I have ever attended. Smart people. I realized that about half of all the smartest computer science guys still have long hair and/or ponytails, ala the 60's ;-)))

11. The inventor of the language Rebol gave a talk. He hates Rebol now, says he did it for the money that an entrepreneur put up. Not too impressive. He says Rebol is dead now (the Dylan inventor disputed that ).

I expect that was Joe Marshall who has written in a couple of places about features he added to REBOL 1.0 which Carl removed before release.

First class continuations and tail-end recursion spring to mind.

I don't have a reference to hand, but try searching on

The reason for the low level of posting here is that this forum came quite late to REBOL.  The official REBOL  mailing list was for a long time the main place for public discussions, though it's been suplimented recently by Altme Worlds.

See http://www.rebol.org/ for an archive of the mailing list and what you'd need to do to check out the REBOL Altme Worlds.  (Note the mailing list has been down for a few days, but it sould be up again soon.  Just had a string of test posts on it today from the (real;) inventor of REBOL - not the one mentioned in that 2001 post.)

It's hard to say if you've bet wrong with REBOL or not.  It's quite useful as it is now, is still being developed, (see... http://www.rebol.net/projects/view1.3/index.html ), and could become a mainstream product like Java or Flash with (quite) a bit of luck.

Promised but not yet here is REBOL for Mac OSX and versions of the plugin for platforms other than Windows.  If they arrive and decent docs appear for View, then it should get quite a boost.

Joe Marshal is NOT the inventor of REBOL. And I think he hasn't got it at all. REBOL 1.0 was 10 times slower and twice bigger. It looks like he doesn't know what REBOL is about at all... quite sad.
